The Thunder of War is the first book of a new military SF series, Thunder In The Heavens, which is now complete with the publication of The Thunder of Vengeance.
The Tyrell are a race that loves to fight, and they’re very good at it. The harder they fight, the better they like it. Whenever they discover another intelligent race, they force them into combat whether they want it or not. When humans are warned of an inevitable confrontation with the Tyrell, they attempt to form a multi-species Alliance, but the challenges are great, and they know it’s only a matter of time before a Tyrell fleet of massive ships will arrive in Earth orbit. Cate Harrow and Gort Eagleton are two Aerospace Force officers with the kind of strategic and tactical skills that the Alliance needs to win this war, but before they can even begin to defeat the Tyrell, they must survive the incompetent leadership that threatens complete disaster.
Defeating the Tyrell will be far more difficult than the Alliance initially believes unless they can discover their one weakness. This action-packed series has lots of space battles and political intrigues, as well as personal triumphs and tragedies.
Excerpt
“Flight Ops to Skydiver. You and your squadron have the green light, Commander. Good luck.”
“Thanks, Ops. Skydiver to Squadron. We have a green light. Sound off when you’ve undocked in sequence order. Here we go.” She turned and nodded to her co-pilot who would maneuver the corvette out the half kilometer wide maw of the carrier, Ranger, while she monitored the rest of the squadron. As Skydiver gently pulled away from the docking bay then past the baffles and moved towards the opening, Harrow switched one of her displays to the rear external view, using computer enhancement to compensate for the low level of light inside the main hangar space. Each corvette in the squadron was undocking and maneuvering in a specified sequence in order to avoid collisions.
“Skydiver is clear of Ranger,” said the co-pilot. As the ship began to accelerate, Harrow watched the carrier start to recede into the distance. Just as she began to shift her gaze, she saw a streak of light hit Ranger from below, penetrate up through the interior of the huge hangar and come out the top of the ship.
“FLIGHT OPS! WHAT THE HELL—“ shouted Harrow.
“—BEEN HIT! RANGER’S BEEN HIT!”
Harrow recognized the voice of the Flight Operations Duty Officer.
“OH GOD! BISMARK REPORTS BEING HIT TOO!”
Harrow thought fast. The Tyrell had obviously detected the four carriers and were firing their long range, faster-than-light kinetic energy projectiles from below. The mission was clearly compromised, and to her way of thinking, getting the carriers to a safe distance was now not only their top priority, it was their only priority.
“SL to Flag!” said Harrow quickly.
“We’re kinda busy right now, Commander!”
Harrow didn’t know who was replying, but she did know it wasn’t Vice-Admiral LeClair, and that’s who she wanted to talk to.
“You tell the Admiral that he needs to order his carriers to jump RIGHT NOW, Goddamit! We’re sitting ducks here!” Without waiting for a reply she turned to the co-pilot. “How many of our ships have cleared the Ranger?”
“They’re all out! Do we try to dock again?”
“God no! No time for that. We’ll have to catch up with her at the rally point if our carriers bug out in time!” She looked at the display that was still showing a now much smaller Ranger. “Come on, TFL! Give the order!”
“Flight Ops to squadron! Ranger is heading for the rally point now! Meet us th—“ The voice cut off at the same instant as the distant carrier vanished from view.
“Ranger’s jumped away!” yelled the co-pilot. “Bismark Sea is gone too!”

The Thunder of War Thunder in the Heavens eBook Dietmar Wehr Reviews
Good book. Well written with believable characters and situations. It does however leave you with a bit of a cliff hanger with no indication of there ever being a sequel. Check out other Deitmar Weir's work....he is a gifted writer with several highly entertaining series.
A solid first book, I really enjoyed it. My preference is standard military sci-fi (not ad-hoc or mercenary) and this fits the bill. Dietmar's usual thorough & concise narrative of the strategies, tactics, and physics makes it a pleasure to read. The characters are well-developed & reasonable, and you know who the good guys are. I was drawn into the story. This is an existential war!
Humans finally make first contact and it is peaceful. But the message delivered during the peaceful contact was a warning. That an alien race is coming that lives for war. And when they come, they give you the tools to wage the war and an exact date they will be back to fight it. Now humanity is in a race, for they must win the coming war or be subjugated.
Dietmar is by far my favorite author of space opera. He has a knack for creating realistic battle scenarios and for creating enemies with a backstory that you want to know more about. The Thunder Of War is a great example of this. I found myself at times, almost rooting for both sides, because I want to know more about the Tyrell and what drives them.
The dialogue and fleet interactions on both sides on the conflict are believable
and well written. I can't wait for Book 2 and the conclusion to this exciting saga!
Wehr latest saga pulled me in. From the opening to the transition at the end , Wehr sets a faster paced space novel the holds your attention. Characters trimpuh, some fall, incompetent leadership with our human flaws, others with leadership and character are in threaded throughout this book. This is what Wehr writes. Wehr allows the reader to identify with different characters the personalities we see around us, in our lives, bringing realism to the story.
I did not want to put this down. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
I was initially intrigued by the premis of a warrior race seeking adversaries that it had first offered a technilogical uplift to in order to fight a"fair and honorable" war of conquest. I knew it would take a huge leap of imagination to believe any society could tranform itself into a viable and successful military force so quicly, but having made the leap Mr. Wehr landed me in a universe of infinite possibilities. I'm looking forward to a long brutal inter species war fought on a galactic scale.
I found it amusing that one of the characters was named Gort. No, the sun doesn't stand still or anything. Mr Wehr is developing a couple of characters who are going up the chain of command by developing and commanding weapon systems designed to defeat aliens who get their kicks out of arming then demolishing various races before forcing them to join their federation. We've meandered through the development of weapon systems that work for a short time, but the other side quickly responds requiring further development. The aliens go into a frenzy while in combat, so they are quick to combat. They are smart, but they are slow to change tactics that to now have worked. They are a formidable foe, so Mr Wehr will have a difficult time trying to credibly defeat them. Right now, our allies have been embarrassed by trying to develop combat tactics without us, and they have lost battles to the extent that they want us beck.
Just finished the first book in the new Thunder of War series and it's definitely a great start. What do you do when a galactic empire based on the joy of battle and conquest is headed your way?
